Newsletter #11

Welcome along to Newsletter no, 11, which kinda blends August into September!

It's been a super busy month (as always!), with the in-store events calendar starting to fill up, as well as loads of brilliant new and reissued music continuing to be announced. It's historically a little quieter around now for new music but heck, 2021 is something else! Ben alone is keeping the business afloat by purchasing everything MF DOOM, the Super Furry Animals reissue, Turin Brakes, DJ Format, Primal Scream....the list goes on!

We hope that you're all well, enjoy the newsletter and fingers crossed for a little more UK sunshine before the dark nights kick in.

As always, we've included our favourite pre-order for the month below, but you can always check out our full list of pre-orders here. We suggest you bookmark it for easy access... don't want you missing out on a banger ;)

Just a word of warning... they do move quick!

We do want to hear from you too! If you've got any suggestions for a pre-order we don't have listed, message us here. You can also chat to us about anything else using that same link.

Our most anticipated pre-order this month is:

Space - Spiders: 25th Anniversary Edition (Yellow Vinyl)

First released in September 1996, Spiders is the debut album by the Liverpudlian alternative rock band Space.

Upon release, the album reached #5 in the UK album charts and received critical acclaim for it’s unique sound, humorous lyrics, and incorporation of varying musical styles. Highlights include the hit singles ‘Female Of The Species’, ‘Neighbourhood’, ‘Me and You Versus the World’ and ‘Dark Clouds’. To mark the 25th anniversary of Spiders, Demon Records is proud to present a new reissue of the album pressed on heavyweight 180g translucent yellow vinyl.

And if this wasn't enough, we're honoured (and mega excited) to be welcoming the band to our store on October 23rd for a record signing session! Their time is limited so if you want to come meet the guys, get down on time (1pm start), make sure you've got your copy of the album with you ready to sign. Oh and, if you fancy seeing them in action, they're on at 7:45pm that night at Aatma Manchester, if you fancy tickets here's the link.

4th September sees us host the third Love Record Stores event and the first ever with our shop doors actually open!

#loverecordstores started life as a social media campaign with a huge range of artists, including Elton John, Paul Weller and Kate Tempest, along with the wider music community uniting under the hashtag to encourage music fans to continue shopping online while stores were shuttered during the national lockdown.

Due to hugely successful events in 2020, the organisers of Love Record Stores decided to make LRS a repeat fixture of importance in the music retail calendar for UK record retailers, labels and music fans alike.

Similar to RSD, LRS is strictly one copy per customer and is sold on a first come first served basis (no reservations allowed). This event starts at 9am on Saturday 4th September, with all remaining stock going online at 9pm.

See all the titles here for more information on what's available.

Please be aware: not all items are available to buy on the 4th, some items are pre-order only, with the physical item being released over the next few months. Check out the 'Release Date' on our website for more information or give us a call/drop us an email.

Pretty cool news for us here in store. Our sales are now being tracked and included in the official music charts, how awesome is that! This means we can hopefully entice a tonne of ace bands who are aiming high in the indie and National charts to play in store and sell their wares after the performance. Obviously they'll want to play on our stage regardless, we're a friendly bunch who make lovely coffee and serve extremely cold beer!

On Monday 30th August 2021, Wax and Beans hosted Glaston-Bury! If you don't already know, Glaston-Bury is a one day fundraiser in aid of Bury Hospice. It involved over 200 bands playing at over fifteen indoor venues and several outdoor stages throughout Bury town centre.

Wax and Beans were lucky enough to welcome a huge range of talent both downstairs and upstairs throughout the day. Some of the acts we saw were: Leon The Pig Farmer, Syncromental, What Ever The Weather, Geoff Bunbury Moriarty and Laural Canyon. Oh and we can't forget to mention the absolutely bonkers but totally smile inducing Mrs Cakehead!

Check out our 30 second clip containing snippets from each of the acts that performed on our Holy Cross stage downstairs.

If you missed out, but would like to donate to the Hospice, please donate here.

Our main events page can be found here. We are constantly updating the calendar so keep your eyes peeled, there's loads of incredible acts lined up over the next few months.

2nd September: Music is Social: Come join us, it's a laid back, relaxed night where we talk music, music and more music. This month we'll be spinning various jazz records and there's bound to be something to pique your interest.

4th September - Daniel Hutchings' Thingy - Live! Daniel Hutchings is celebrating the end of the lockdown restrictions by taking his favorite songs from his three feature length art comedies, or "Thingys" as he calls them, and performing them live. Expect a mix of musical comedy, quick fire jokes, indie rock, infectious giggles with maximum fun for children of all ages. Grab tickets here and we'll see you soon!

5th September - A Super Furry Animals Listening Party: Join us and Tim's Listening Party at 4pm for the Super Furry Animals album, Rings Around the World. We'll be listening in unison and tweeting live from the shop, whilst we enjoy this brilliant reissue. If you can't join us, grab your 20th Anniversary Edition here and listen at your convenience.

26th September: In Your Ears Music: Driven by keen music fans wanting to showcase new and undiscovered super-talented artists, In Your Ears Music have a podcast, radio station and on the last Sunday of each month on the lead up to Christmas they'll be taking over Wax and Beans promoting a live performance. Keep your eyes on the calendar for the announcement of this month's artist.

Pulp - This Is Hardcore

This is Hardcore is the sixth album by the British band. Released in 1998, it is the follow up to the critically acclaimed 1995 album 'Different Class' and features the singles 'Help the Aged', 'This Is Hardcore', 'A Little Soul' and 'Party Hard'. Luna does love the poetic sounds of Mr Cocker. She also loved his lockdown deejay sets (what can we say, she does love to 'Party Hard' - sorry!)

LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE

That might sound a bit drastic but as he was completing his sign-off to his listeners and introducing ‘A Forest’ by The Cure, which would be the closing song of Show 44, his mind started wandering…

“Was that my favourite playlist so far?” He thought to himself. “Cos there were some absolute bangers in shows 42 and 43. And show 39 got to number 6 on the Mixcloud New Wave chart so that must’ve been half decent”

Still very new to the DJ/Presenter role on Express FM he’d stumbled into back at the tail end of 2019, he was quite self-critical of his performance. But boy it had improved.

The first 6 shows were done at the radio station, recorded ‘as-live’ full of pregnant pauses, dry-mouthed word salads and air-gaps where song intros should be. Plus the radio station’s library of Indie, Alternative, Post Punk, Ska and New Wave tracks didn’t quite match his own vinyl and CD collection.

Check out Kev's full blog on our Blog page.
