Best Indie record of all time

This is by far one of the best records of all time, it's probably in my top 5 (Trout Mask Replica being number 1 by a long way) and I consume a lot of music and have been doing so for decades. It's one of my most highly prized pieces of vinyl. My hands actually shake when I reach for this in my collection. Everything is distorted to the max, even the acoustic guitars. It runs a crazy ride between funereal marches to lo-fi psychedelia, switching in a heart beat into hardcore indie punk and then into wistful acoustic guitar. It's Jeff Mangum's opus grande without doubt. Being based on his exposure to "Diary Of A Young Girl" by Anne Frank it thus forms a sort of loose concept album and Jeff's final masterpiece. In fact, you can hear Jeff place his guitar on the floor at the end of the record and walk away. And that's pretty much what he did in real life. He rarely performed again and Neutral Milk Hotel stopped right there. Stand out track for me is "Ghost". Other geeky points to note: listen out for the exclamation of "holy s**t" by one of the other musicians as Jeff lays down the 8 minute plus "Oh Comely" in just one take! This is a truly epic recording and one any vinyl collector should not be without. Next steps? If you like this then go for "Live at Jittery Joe's"
